The San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus (SDGMC) is excited to announce a first ever artistic collaboration with two queer choruses from Mexico: Coro Gay Ciudad de México (from Mexico City) and Coro Gay de Tijuana.
Stronger Together / Más Fuertes Juntos will conclude SDGMC’s 38th season on July 29-30, 2023, at the Balboa Theatre in San Diego. All three choruses will perform together on the Balboa stage in a powerful wave of pop and choral sound. You will experience an emotional rollercoaster as these three queer choruses from the US and Mexico come together in solidarity and friendship, to tell their stories, fight for their rights and celebrate their common humanity with an entertaining and uplifting concert just in time for Pride!
The performances in San Diego are the conclusion of a three-city tour that will begin in Mexico City. On June 10 and 11, 2023, SDGMC and the Coro Gay de Tijuana will join the Coro Gay Ciudad by México to help them celebrate their 10th anniversary with the first performances of Stronger Together / Más Fuertes Juntos. at the Teatro de la Ciudad Esperanza Iris, one of the most important and glamorous performance venues in Mexico City.
On July 27, 2023, Stronger Together / Más Fuertes Juntos will be presented at CECUT, the Cultural Center of Tijuana with the San Diego and Mexico City choruses as the special guests of Coro Gay de Tijuana.
We sat down with our Artistic Director, Dr. Charles Beale, for his perspective on why this exciting artistic collaboration is happening now.
Why is the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus doing this?
“This is a hugely exciting and potentially transforming project for SDGMC. It establishes us as having an international reach, and a deep commitment to the queer singing of our all Latinx neighbors and close allies in San Diego and of course Mexico itself. That commitment is intrinsic to where we are and who we are and will grow in coming years.”
Tell us more about the other choruses involved in this concert tour.
“Our collaboration with Coro Gay de Tijuana will be an opportunity for them put themselves on the map within their city. They now have around 20 singers and just recently celebrated their 3rd anniversary – so they are very new in the LGBTQIA+ choral movement. These concerts will raise their profile, and that of the local LGBTQIA+ community in the city, on a scale that was previously unknown. They have the support of the city of Tijuana itself in putting on this show. This will leave the Tijuana chorus in a wonderful position to build a bigger brand, attract new members, and building new audiences. We look forward to many collaborations with our neighbors in song.
“For Coro Gay Ciudad de México, our collaboration will form part of their 10th Anniversary celebrations. With almost 100 singers, they are growing fast, and have become the largest and most influential chorus in Mexico. They are also using this event to hold an international meeting that will launch a new network of choruses that will stretch across Central and South America. For them this is a milestone event, and a celebration that they have come this far. Given their populist government, both choruses are currently in a social and political struggle deeper than that in the US. By offering international support, we lift their voices even higher.”
