Women’s chamber chorus, Sorelle San Diego, will present Elemental, a fall concert on Sunday, October 13 at 2:00 p.m. in Encinitas. Directed by Michelle Risling and accompanied by Anna Juliar, Sorelle will perform compelling choral works that highlight the ways in which we interact with earth, air, fire and water.
Pieces to be performed include the Elements suite by Katerina Gimon, whose fourth movement depicts the reflective, connecting and nourishing qualities of water. In Flight by Ryan Murphy, air is used as a poetic device to convey the sense of freedom realized through air and flight. Complementing the selections is Day of Fire and Sun, by Kate Crellin with text by Sara Teasdale, an energetic and rhythmic representation of how we integrate the elements into our everyday storytelling.
North Coast Singers’ Capella youth choir will join Sorelle for part of Gimon’s Elements as well as perform their own programming featuring Victor C. Johnson’s Tres Canciones de Los Elementos, vividly imagined short pieces about wind, rain and fire. Sorelle will also be joined by San Diego State University’s talented Andromeda String Quartet.
“Sorelle’s concert repertoire demonstrates how we rely on the natural elements to communicate our feelings as people. Earth can suggest calm and sturdiness, fire can represent anger, water can depict connection, air can convey flight and freedom,” said Michelle Risling, conductor.
Ticket proceeds will benefit Wild Willow Farm & Education Center, a five-acre working farm in south San Diego owned and managed by the Resource Conservation District of Greater San Diego County. The Farm’s mission is to connect the community to local food, starting with the soil, by facilitating agricultural programs that promote resource conservation and regenerative farming practices. The Farm is a nurturing space that encourages biodiversity, self-empowerment and connection to food, land and each other.
