Encinitas, Calif. (March 11, 2024)—Women’s chamber chorus, Sorelle San Diego, will present (of War), a collaborative concert with the San Diego State University (SDSU) Treble Choir, on Saturday, April 20 at 4:00 p.m. in Encinitas. Directed by Michelle Risling and accompanied by Anna Juliar, Sorelle’s April concert includes unique arrangements for women’s voices of texts written from the perspective of men involved in war. The special arrangements bring to light the stories of an often-marginalized group.
“Our spring repertoire offers the culmination of Sorelle’s year-long theme of peace and war. While our October concert examined peace as the calm after a storm, our April program has sharper edges. Our concert showcases Einojuhani Rautavaara’s angular Suite de Lorca, and Inveniam Viam by Ryan Main; pieces which evoke the imagery of war,” said Michelle Risling, Artistic Director of Sorelle.
In a collaboration with SDSU’s Treble Choir, the combined choirs will perform a newly commissioned arrangement of Armistice 1918: Everyone Sang by Craig Carnahan. Siegfried Sassoon’s poem “Everyone Sang” was written shortly after the end of World War I. The SDSU Treble Choir, now in its second year, is honored to join Sorelle on this project. “The collaboration has created a space for holding meaningful discussion with our singers and questioning extant narratives about women’s positionality with respect to war,” said Arian Khaefi, SDSU Director of Choral Studies.
Ticket proceeds will benefit the International Rescue Committee in San Diego, which provides support for refugees and asylum seekers fleeing violence and persecution to resettle and thrive in America.
