Job Title: Chancel Choir Soprano Section Leader

Grade Status: Part time (10 hours/week)

Immediate Supervisor: Director of Choral Activities (incoming June 2022)

First United Methodist Church, San Diego, invites singers interested in being the Soprano Section Leader for the Chancel Choir. The ideal candidate sight reads well (or prepares music in advance), can sing in the soprano section without overpowering the section, and can sing solos beautifully, sometimes with orchestra backing. The Chancel Choir has a tour planned to Ireland in May 2023 for nine days, and the Soprano Section Leader is expected to participate.

Job Description Overview:

  1. Sing in the Chancel Choir soprano section for all regularly scheduled Sunday morning services (9:00 & 11:00, call at 8:30), as well as the weekly Thursday rehearsals (7:00-9:00) from September through June. The soprano staff singer also joins the Jubilee Singers when they are scheduled to sing in morning worship services
  2. Sing in the soprano section in Summer Choir during July and August
  3. Sing as a soloist or sing in the soprano section for two choral concerts per year. Additional concerts may be scheduled with additional remuneration. Concerts include a few extra rehearsals
  4. Sing in the Chancel Choir soprano section, or participate a a soloist for all special/seasonal/ holiday/occasional services, including Ash Wednesday and Palm Sunday-Easter Sunday
  5. Sing in the Chancel Choir soprano section for the annual Choir Advance (one Saturday morning in mid-September)
  6. Give adequate notice during absence and provide a qualified substitute
  7. Willingness to sing solos in choral anthems, as well as learn new repertoire (solos, small ensemble music) as needed, in consultation with the Director of Choral Activities
  8. Willingness to serve as a vocal model for the soprano section in consultation with the Director of Choral Activities
  9. Prepare solos in advance, and/or meet with the Organist/Director of Music Ministries to practice solos.
  10. Maintain a high level of vocal proficiency
  11. Sight read choral and solo music to a high standard, or prepares music in advance of rehearsals
  12. Ability to work cooperatively with church employees, as well as the volunteer singers in the choir
  13. Respectful of Methodist church traditions
  14. Other duties as assigned
