Choral Consortium of San Diego presents:

San Diego Sings!

Choirs from around San Diego–and across the border–are preparing to gather this month for a one-day festival showcasing the rich range of voices that make up the region. San Diego Sings! will feature 15 choirs in three concerts on March 28th.

“It is a real kaleidoscopic view into the world of choral music making in San Diego and the region,” said Arian Khaefi, event co-chair and director of Choral Studies at San Diego State University. “There is no other festival like this in San Diego.”

Staged at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla, San Diego Sings! is broken into three concerts, each featuring five groups singing 12-minute segments amid the stunning acoustics of the Baker-Baum Concert Hall.

The event allows audiences to sample the region’s range of choral groups in one place in a single day–children’s choruses, church groups, acapella ensembles, community choruses, chamber singers. Some choirs have over 100 members, others fewer than 20. Performers are of all ages and backgrounds, and range from professional singers to novices.

San Diego Sings! is organized by the Choral Consortium of San Diego, a network of more than 80 choruses–mostly from San Diego, but with growing participation from Baja California; this year’s lineup includes more Mexican groups than ever:  two groups from Tijuana and one from Rosarito Beach.

“It's exciting that the reach of the festival is expanding and that we're able to showcase more groups internationally, " Khaefi said. “One of the missions of the consortium is to serve as a bridge for the region.”

Choral singing at any level brings a range of benefits to participants, building important community bridges. Chorus America, an advocacy and research group based in Washington, D.C., reports that as many as one in six Americans sing in choruses. Its studies have found that adult singers have improved mental health and greater civic engagement. Children who sing in choirs do better academically, the study found, and learn important social skills such as team building.

The Choral Consortium of San Diego was created in 2010 by leaders of area choirs responding to a need for better coordination, especially in scheduling concerts on non-conflicting dates. The groups share resources, promote each other’s concerts, and develop community-wide events.

First staged in 2015 in Balboa Park, San Diego Sings! is the consortium’s signature event. It is held every other year (except for 2021, when it was canceled due to COVID). “It’s a great showcase of what’s happening in the choral arts, what conductors are doing, how the groups sound, and in that way, it’s very exciting,” Khaefi said.

Khaefi is also chorus director for the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus. His co-chair for San Diego Sings! is Yewon Lee, director of the San Diego Festival Chorus and music director at San Dieguito United Methodist Church.

The groups selected for San Diego Sings this year will showcase a broad range of styles, including Broadway classics, Latin American songs, sacred music, secular pieces, folk songs. Featured composers include Cole Porter, John Rutter, Kyle Pederson, Eva Ugalde, Francis Poulenc, Sarah Quartel, Roberto Cantoral.
